A padded jersey, shorts (or more frequently, pants), and protection gear are all part of an American football uniform. Usually composed of breathable, long-lasting fabric, the jersey features player numbers, team colors, and emblems. Although shorts are uncommon, they can be worn in training or less formal contexts, even though the uniform is mostly composed of pants. In order to provide protection, the shorts or pants have built-in knee, hip, and thigh protectors. Gloves, cleats, shoulder pads, and a helmet are additional protective equipment. Because of the high level of contact in the sport, the uniform is made to enhance both protection and agility.
